There’s a family in Puglia that has been dedicated to grapes and wine for almost a century.
Pasquale Mottura founded his winery in 1927 and threw himself body and soul into production of autochthonous varietals telling the story of the many peoples who have passed through the land of Puglia: Greeks… Phoenicians… Normans…
A difficult task, in hard times when intuition and tenacity won out over the asperity of the earth and the harshness of life in a place where nature was the only source of wealth.
And yet by the ’40s Mottura had become one of the most important wineries in the entire Salento area, with its ancient winegrowing tradition.
Pasquale understood that it was important to maintain local traditions and continue growing autochthonous varietals such as Primitivo and Negroamaro – vines that the people of Puglia had in their DNA – resisting the temptation to introduce new grape varietals.
This is the idea he passed on to his son Vito, who, having glimpsed the great potential of wine-growing in Puglia, gave the family business a major boost by extending the distribution of its wines all over Italy and working hard to continue improving the quality and image of the wines of the Salento area.
Unfortunately Vito’s career was interrupted prematurely, but his sons and spiritual heirs Pasquale and Antonio, who are still at the helm of the company today, took over his pursuit of the goals that he placed at the centre of the company’s spirit: maintaining and improving its specific qualities.
This is the story of the Mottura family: faithfulness to their own principles, to their own culture, to their own family tradition.
Today the winery is run by brothers Antonio and Pasquale Mottura, whose hard work and enthusiasm continues to confirm how the foundations laid seventy-seven years ago have been consolidated and reinforced, building on the local winegrowing tradition and renewing productive techniques.
In the past four years the company has benefited from the contribution of another member of the family - Barbara – bringing new ideas and enthusiasm, the vital sap of a young, modern enterprise.
